Our response to UUK’s blueprint for change

Following today’s release of UUK's blueprint for change, we are encouraged by UUK's recognition that the current Higher Education settlement is failing both students and institutions, and that significant change is required to secure the future of higher education in the UK and support the Government’s wider ambitions for the economy and society.

We welcome UUK's proposal to restore Maintenance Grants. The restoration of Maintenance Grants is crucial to ensuring that higher education is accessible to all. As outlined in our Manifesto, affordability remains one of the most significant barriers for students.

We are therefore encouraged by UUK’s call for reforms to address the financial pressures that students are facing through the reintroduction of Maintenance Grants. Without this, too many students will continue to struggle with the rising cost of living, limiting both their academic success and personal wellbeing.

We believe that the student voice must be included at every stage of policymaking when shaping the future of UK higher education. Without this, we risk having decisions made about students without their direct involvement - a missed opportunity to ensure policies reflect their lived experiences and needs.

As Russell Group Students' Unions, we will continue to advocate for policies that break down barriers and prioritise students' financial security, wellbeing, and their crucial role in shaping the higher education system.
