Our Response to the Immigration White Paper
A spokesperson for the Russell Group Students’ Unions (RGSU) said:
“It is clear from the Government’s own data, as well as the comprehensive research conducted in the RGSU and UKCISA joint report 'Globally Competitive: A Report on the International Student Experience,' that the vast majority of international students come to the UK legitimately to pursue their studies, motivated by the world-class education provided by UK universities. These students significantly contribute economically, culturally, and academically to our institutions and communities. That said, we do acknowledge the need for the Government to address the tiny minority who misuse the Student Visa route, but this must be done without harming the vast majority who bring substantial benefits.
We are therefore disappointed by the Government's proposal to reduce the Graduate Visa route to 18 months. International students have proven to contribute billions to the UK economy each year and help fill critical skills shortages in our workforce, yet this policy directly contradicts the Government's economic growth agenda. Reducing this visa to 18 months will further deter employers from hiring graduates on this visa, damaging the attractiveness of UK higher education and negatively impacting our economy.
We strongly urge the Government to review our report with UKCISA, which provides in-depth analysis and insights into the experiences and contributions of international students. Additionally, regarding the proposed levy on higher education providers' income from international students, we stress that this must not impact international student tuition fees. The Government should clearly outline how these funds will be reinvested into enhancing the higher education and skills sector, as well as improving the international student experience.
The RGSU remains committed to working closely with the Government to ensure policies reflect and support the true value that international students bring to the UK.”
